About

I am currently working as associate professor and research coordinator at HUMlab, and as associate professor at the Department of historical, philosophical and religious studies.

Together with professor Jørgen Straarup I am also working in a three years (2010-2012) long project called “Pinocchio Goes to Church: The Religious Life of Avatars”. The project aims at studying constructions and perceptions of holiness and sacred spaces in virtual worlds such as Second Life.

In my resent work I am interested in the relation between digital media and Christianity/Church. I’ve for example made presentations on social media and Church. I also have an interest in the use of digital media and pedagogy and have both published on the subject, and also developed courses along those lines.

I have my background in the History of Science and Ideas, and I defended my MPhil-thesis in 2001, in The History of Christianity (Birmingham, UK). In 2003 I defended my PhD-thesis “A Chosen People: Revivalism and Secularisation – Evangeliska Fosterlands-Stiftelsen 1856–1910” (“Ett utvalt släkte: Väckelse och sekularisering – Evangeliska Fosterlands-Stiftelsen 1856–1910”). I studied the changing role of religion during the latter half of the 19th century. See abstract

In my work I have dealt with the relations between social and religious transformations throughout history. I have for example written the book “Christendom and the modern worldview: Northern Europe 1500–2000” (“Kristendom och den moderna världsbilden: Norra Europa 1500–2000”), which is dealing with the relation between Christianity and modern world view since the reformation.

Apart from abovementioned work I have several publications on 19th century revivalism and the relation to for example modernity, adult education, regional identity, and I’ve also done work on the Christian left wing student movement of the 1960s.

My main interest concerns mainly, in other words, the relation between religious and social changes – throughout history and in contemporary society.
